The Welfare Policy Research Project was established by the 1997 state legislation that created California’s CalWORKs program. In response to our legislative mandates, WPRP:

  • is operating a research grants program to support applied welfare policy research sought by state and local officials;

 

  • has helped to establish the California Census Research Data Center, with secure operating facilities at UC Berkeley and UCLA;

 

  • has created and is maintaining a searchable welfare research database for the State of California; and

               Brief                     Report

 

Caseload trends provide the context for this second report from the study The Effects of Five-Year Welfare Time Limits in California commissioned by WPRP.  This report describes CalWORKs families as they approach the time limit.  Findings from a telephone survey of 1,797 recipients in six focus counties conducted between June 2004 and August 2005.

 

 

 

  • is sponsoring and organizing policymaker forums on cutting-edge welfare-related issues and research findings.

 

Resources permitting, WPRP also provides technical assistance to state and local officials seeking information on welfare-related questions.

 

 

WPRP to Issue Request for Proposals

 

WPRP will issue an RFP in the summer of 2007 with the selected applicant to begin the research study early in calendar year 2008.  Watch this space for updates.
